Jason K. Cooper is a research scientist at LBNL in the Chemical Sciences Division working at the Liquid Sunlight Alliance (LiSA) and the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis (JCAP). His research investigates light-initiated energy transformation processes in emerging semiconductor and plasmonic systems and couples them to catalytic reactions. His approach spans materials fabrication, characterization, and test-bed devices but principally focuses on connecting electronic structure to emergent material properties with the goal to improve efficiency, stability, and selectivity of CO2 reduction to liquid fuels. A principal area of focus is transient absorption spectroscopy which is used to probe photocarrier dynamics from absorption of a photon to chemical transformation. Employing a variety of spectroscopic tools in conjunction with theoretical modeling, he seeks to develop new materials and chemistries to inspire technologies for the new solar era.
